ACQUIRED/DONOR: 1998/Visual AIDS
TITLE: ‘AIDS It’s Everywhere you want to be’
DISCUSSION: A beautifully simple but powerful broadside by artist and designer Harvey Weiss that was distributed by Visual AIDS for their 1998 Day Without Art. By co-opting this symbol of corporate might the artist hoped to address the economic/corporate determinism of the AIDS crisis, the exclusivity of health care, the relationship the virus has to debt, and the complacency of the public when it comes to AIDS issues which, we would add, extends to this sticker itself. We always scratch our head when most people don’t see the word AIDS printed on this sign, asking if we take Master Card as well.
And doesn’t that say it all?
